A closer look at our boarding community

At RGSKL, boarding is about belonging. Our dedicated villas for boys and girls provide a warm, family-style environment where students feel known, supported and truly at home.

Led by caring House Parents and a committed pastoral team, boarders experience a thoughtful balance of structure and independence, academic focus and wellbeing. Shared meals, evening activities and daily school transport create a safe and connected routine that nurtures confidence, resilience and lasting friendships.

Practical information

Boarders live in separate boys’ and girls’ villas, with rooms shared by two to four students. Houseparents provide the day-to-day family structure, supported by supervised prep, evening activities, weekend experiences, security and access to school facilities.

Students may remain in boarding during half-term. At end-of-term holidays the boarding house closes, and boarders return home or to their Educational Guardian. RGSKL strongly recommends that international boarders whose parents live overseas appoint a local Educational Guardian in Malaysia, someone who can support the child in an emergency and provide or arrange accommodation during holidays and breaks. Families who prefer not to appoint a guardian may complete our Guardianship Waiver and Acknowledgement Form and must make their own arrangements for accommodation, supervision and care outside term time. Airport arrival arrangements can be discussed with Admissions and Boarding.

A school nurse is available during the school day; boarding staff are first-aid trained and out-of-hours medical support arrangements are in place.

LIFE IN BOARDING

A week in boarding

Boarders travel between the villas and school by bus, with a member of staff on board for every journey. No student travels alone.

Evenings are structured around supervised prep and time to unwind. Weekends bring sport, activities, and trips out across Kuala Lumpur, from the city’s landmarks to its markets and malls. Boarders see the country they are living in, not just the school they are studying at.

Meals are cooked on site and shared. Breakfast before school, lunch between lessons, dinner together in the evening. We plan menus with students in mind who are a long way from home. There is familiar food, and there is food worth trying.

Where English is an additional language, extra support runs alongside normal lessons rather than replacing them. Students keep pace with their year group while their English catches up. Language is never the reason a student holds back.

The next chapter

of boarding at RGSKL

Purpose-built, from the ground up, for students who live here. Our new boarding facility opens with 250 places across two residential blocks, one for boys and one for girls, with a separate staff building alongside.

Room arrangements range from single rooms to shared rooms for two to four students. Inside: study and common rooms on both sides, a dining hall that seats the whole school at once, a fitness centre, a games room and a cinema, surau facilities, and laundry and kitchenettes on every floor.

Boarding staff live in the building. Matron and tutor rooms sit within the residential blocks, and the housemaster’s apartment is on site, so there is always an adult a short walk from your child’s door.

Students joining now begin in our villas, with the same boarding parent and the same routine, and move across when the new facility opens.

Boarding applicants follow the normal school admissions process and also have a conversation with our Head of Boarding, helping us understand how they may settle into boarding life and how we can support them.

Bright, well-equipped classrooms and age-appropriate learning zones support exploration, movement, and collaboration. From our dedicated Early Years inside areas to creative play corners and outdoor learning areas, every space is thoughtfully designed to meet children’s developmental needs and spark imaginative thinking.
